Where do the mermaids stand?
The essence of this spirit was captured in a moving speech about tolerance given last year by the student body president of one of your sister colleges. She related the story by Robert Fulghum about a young pastor who, finding himself in charge of some very energetic children, hits upon a game called "Giants, Wizards and Dwarfs." "You have to decide now," the pastor instructed the children, "which you are ... a giant, a wizard or a dwarf?"
At that, a small girl tugging at his pants leg, asked, "But where do the mermaids stand?"
The pastor told her there are no mermaids, and she says, "Oh yes there are," she said. "I am a mermaid."
Now this little girl knew what she was and she was not about to give up on either her identity or the game. She intended to take her place wherever mermaids fit into the scheme of things. Where do the mermaids stand ... All those who are different, those who do not fit the boxes and pigeonholes? "Answer that question," wrote Fulghum, "and you can build a school, a nation, or a whole world."

I vaguely remember Chris being unfamiliar with rock music and I wondered if you shared that tragic loss. Or perhaps I'm totally mistaken about Chris and I just misremembered.
Goodness no! :-) My inaugural song, downloaded (legally) just to celebrate the new player, was "It's Raining Men." :-)
Chris and I have a truce that I think might be instructive for some of the wider Christian world. I respect that he doesn't care for rock music, so I do my best not to listen to it around him (secular or Christian). And he undertands that I occasionally run out of my capacity to enjoy classical, so he periodically tolerates it. But apart from immoral lyrics, neither of us have moral issues with any particular style although there are some that neither of us like.
Does your bro want to scrounge up any more $45 mp3 players? ;)
I need some headphones. Puck ate mine.
I'll e-mail him and ask him to keep an eye out. :-) I need new headphones too. The ones that came with the nifty snifty MP3 aren't so nifty.
